IRUPA Golf Classic
The IRUPA Rugby Players’ Golf Classic was a great success as participants turned out in force for an eventful day of competition on August 17th, hosted by the breathtaking Powerscourt Hotel and Golf Club Resort. Despite the rain, 22 teams took to the East Course for a four-ball scramble tournament.
The IRUPA members hoping to show off their golfing skills included Chairman Rob Kearney, accompanied by his brother Dave, Ireland captain Rory Best and his international teammates Cian Healy and Andrew Trimble. The IRUPA Clubhouse members also exhibited great talent on the greens with Liam Toland, Reggie Corrigan, Mal O’Kelly, Gordon D’Arcy amongst those to take part.
As in previous years each grouping was joined by an IRUPA member in the fourball scramble. After braving a torrential downpour, all the teams made their way to the hotel for a gourmet buffet to refuel and relax. Prize giving, hosted by former international Andrew Dunne, revealed our tournament winners.
First place was claimed by a William Fry side comprising Michael Quinn, David Dunne, Declain Taite and Leinster’s Dan Leavy. A second William Fry assortment of David Maughan, Alan Geraghty, Niall O’Brien and Andrew Trimble came in second, while third place went to the Ulster Bank team of Philip Russell, Ken Tyrrell, David Branagan and former player Denis Hickie. Further awards such as the Longest Drive was also awarded to Hickie, while Alan Carley was Closest to the Pin.
The awards ceremony was then followed by a Q&A session in which Ulster’s Rory Best and his club colleague Andrew Trimble gratefully obliged.
Many thanks to all the support we received from companies and businesses who participated in the tournament, to our partner Powerscourt Resort and Spa, all the team at the Powerscourt Golf Club and of course all our members for their support.
